Story by Jan Rybka Art by Thierry Capezzone
All the world knows the fairy tales of the great writer Hans Christian Andersen. HANS, a graphic novel series from Andersen’s native country of Denmark, asks what if Andersen’s magical tales were inspired by magical adventures he had as a boy!

Book 1: Hans and the Magic Hat – Hans is a boy like any other, until the day when his grandfather gives him a magic hat. With the help of his hat and his enchanting fantasy, he comes to meet the fantasy characters that would inspire his famous fairy tales years later, including the Little Mermaid and his new love, Karen a poor little girl consigned to selling matches on the street. Other characters from Andersen’s fairy tales that appear include the dogs from The Tinderbox, the frog from Thumbelina, and Karen flying on a bird like Thumbelina
Book 1.5: Hans and the Forgotten Manuscript – Hans and Karen try out for a play. Hans gets a part thanks to his magic hat and life in the theater starts to impress him so much that he is inspired to write, but when the other actors try to steal his writing he stores the manuscript away where it will remain undiscovered for more than a century. Includes appearances by
the Ugly Duckling,
the Snowman, and the shoes from
The Red Shoes.
Book 2: Hans and the Brothers Grimm – Hans is sent to Copenhagen on a perilous journey by mail coach to borrow money from an aunt. In the big city he runs into the Brothers Grimm, who interestingly possess magic hats just like Hans. When their hats get mixed up, all three storytellers are transported to a land where their creations are real! Includes appearances by (among others)
the Snow Queen and
Red Riding Hood in a battle between Andersen’s fairy tale characters and those of the Brothers Grimm!
Book 3: Hans and the Monk’s Secret – Hans and his grandfather meets a mysterious and sinister monk who is possibly behind the origin or Hans’ fantastic hat, and could cause Hans to lose the most precious thing in his life.
Book 4: Hans and Victor – Young Hans is kidnapped and forced to “join” the French army, but he fails the army physical and ends up on the streets of Paris. Starving, he steals a piece of bread, only to be discovered and hunted by the polce. Hans finds help in a new friend – young Victor Hugo and his girlfriend Cosette. Appearances include
the Steadfast Tin Soldier,
the Ugly Duckling and Hugo’s characters Quasimodo, Esmerelda, and Javert!
