Roy Thomas writing Roodhaar (aka Ember) and John Carter

Legendary writer Roy Thomas has recently taken on scripting duties for two fantasy-adventure comics, ‘Roodhaar’ for Don Lawrence Collection and ‘John Carter’ for the Edgar Rice Burroughs website.  Grand Design represents a number of comics created by the Eisner Hall of Fame writer, including Alter Ego, Captain Thunder and Blue Bolt, and Anthem as well as new properties Rath 3000, Victory Brigade, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Roodhaar, also known as Ember, is being written by Roy Thomas with illustrations by Romano Molenaar.  The series is being serialized by Netherlands-based publisher Don Lawrence Collection in their magazine EPPO.  The strip is a spin-off of  Lawrence’s long-running international hit sci-fi/fantasy series ‘Storm’, and tells the solo adventures of supporting character Ember (Roodhaar in Dutch).  The Don Lawrence Collection website explains:

Ember gets her own spin-off. Roy Thomas, writer of Conan and Red Sonja combined forces with Romano Molenaar the main artist on Storm. They’re working on the exiting first story ‘De Legend of Krill’ which runs in Eppo Magazine right now. The book will be published by the end of this year by Don Lawrence Collection. The Legend of Krill takes part before Storm crashed with his space shuttle in The Deep World. Embers story start with the rebel childhood till the moment she travels with Kiley into the Deep World.

Thomas is working on Ember with the very talented artist Romano Molenaar, who has previously illustrated ‘Storm’ for Don Lawrence Collection, as well as work in the American comics market for Marvel and Image, including the fantasy series ‘More than Mortal´ and ´Witchfinder’.  Grand Design Communications handled rights for ‘More Than Mortal’ and licensed the title to Semic in France and Planeta in Spain. roodhaarspinoff1Eppo_Roodhaar Starting this summer, Roy Thomas is also going to be scripting the ongoing adventures of the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs hero, John Carter, for the official Edgar Rice Burroughs website.  The Comics Beat reported May 20:

In a related development, new John Carter: Warlord of Mars “adventure strip” episodes will make their online debut in early summer as part of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Digital Comic Strip Service at www.edgarriceburroughs.com/comics.  Written by the legendary Roy Thomas, with art by Pegaso (Rodolfo Perez Garcia) of Mexico City, this series will invite readers to accompany John Carter and his compatriots on exciting adventures that delve into the rich, storied history of Barsoom (as the inhabitants of Mars refer to their planet).  As with the other nine series featured on the site, including Tarzan and Carson of Venus, the first four episodes of John Carter: Warlord of Mars will be viewable at no charge.

Thomas currently writes two Tarzan strips for the subscription-based comics section on the Edgar Rice Burroughs website, ‘Tarzan of the Apes’ with artist Pablo Marcos, adapting the original Tarzan novels, and ‘Tarzan’ with artist Tom Grindberg, featuring new Tarzan adventures.tarzan_by_thomas_grindberg
